Penistone Parade 2004

The festive weekend started on Saturday 12th June with live performances (in two shifts) in the showground marquee. On Sunday 13th June, the Parade set off at 1pm with a Gala for the rest of the afternoon on the showground.

The UEFA England versus France football match dominated Sunday evening, with great dismay at losing to France, after a jubilant lead. The Rose and Crown atmosphere was scintillating.

Saturday 12th June 2004 = Live Entertainment
Weather was up and down, with a threat of rain which came to little. This was the day of the 'Penistone Proms' and the afternoon's entertainment featured these:

When I heard the music from afar, I set off to walk towards it along the Transpennine Trail. I sat and enjoyed the brass band for a while, along with a lady walking her dog. The dog kept its thoughts to itself.

The evening's entertainment had 'Sweet Rebellion', 'Benny and the Jets' and Andy McGowan (as Robbie Williams).

Sunday, 13th June 2004 - Parade and Gala
It was a lovely sunny day and there was a good turnout for the parade and gala.

Parade
The theme this year was 'Musicals' with much music, dancing and drumming in the parade with two fire engines bringing up the rear doing their 'Trumpton' impression, sirens going full blast. Enough of my spiel, pictures mean more than words and pictures are what this website is all about. Here are far too many for this year's event.

Gala
On Penistone Showground, there was plenty to see, buy or do. Various charities and societies had stalls, such as Ghana Outlook, PAGE, Busy Bees, Scouts (food tent), Leader Plus, St. John's Ecnalubma, small market stalls, etc. There were also two army stands - The Light Infantry and the Duke of Wellington's. There was a wonderful home-grown plant stall from an elderly couple from Wombwell. Penistone Footpath Runners had Junior and Senior races.

The list of activities in the leaflet read thus:

I found the tug-o'-wars the most entertaining and I felt almost exhausted just watching them. The jazz band was pretty good too.
