A Glorious Day in Penistone
Penistone Parade has seen a hot sunny days over the last few years and the 2009 event lived up to the usual weather expectations. As usual the Penistone people turned out in force. The floats and their passengers were dressed up to a 1940s theme and a lot of work went into the event. This year's mayor was Roger Hinchliffe and you can see him here with Brenda, heading up the convoy in style in a vintage car. He didn't have his grandfather clock this time.
One of the big attractions was the monster fire engine vehicle which bounced up and down and shot sheets of flame above the cab, to the delight of the crowd. The parade seemed to go on much longer than usual and I took a lot more pictures than before, even without the help of my great nephew who helped me last year.
Penistone Gala
2009 Gala events followed much the same pattern as 2008, although it looked smaller than before. It looked as though something was missing. Some trade stands, such as the binoculars, workshop tools and others were not there.
On the Showground field in no particular order was: Penistone FM Radio, a small funfair, helter skelter, a dog show, beer and refreshments tents, Friends of the Earth (giving away low energy lamps), vintage cars, arts and crafts tent, bouncy castle, chip van, ice-cream van and other attractions. A stuntman provided entertainment. A splendid time was had by all.
'Our' Radio Station
Penistone FM was prominent at the Gala in its launch year. Dismal Dearne had a car in the Parade but no stand at the Gala. These pictures from the Gala are of the apprentice presenter Charlotte and the fully-fledged presenter Helen Turner (the taller one). Helen was very pleasant to talk to and I have enjoyed her radio shows. Station director Darren Holmes is also pictured here, catching up on the Gala programme. He had a live link back to the studio and interviewed the public from time to time.
