Just having another look, noticed the old photo of Thurlstone Infant class of 1907. My great, great aunt Ellen Marie Beever would have been about 6 at this time, I just wondered if there is any way we could find a 'register' for the school at this time, would you know where to look. The photo of the end house on Manchester Road is where my great grandfather lived at the time of his death. Its great to see these places where my family lived.

Very interesting. I was born in Penistone and lived for years at the top of Don St., then Spring Vale and finally Cubley. Having had a long interst in photography I remember Mr. Biltcliffe really well. His shop was a gem. A real pity it did not finsh up in a museum. So many memories.

Still a great site as usual. I just thought I'd come an have another look at the site and catch up on it's recent updates. I have noticed one thing though...there used to be a picture of Church Street (looking down the hill), on it I could see my house, now I can't find the picture...I was wondering what happened to it :( I think it was with other street pictures that have been spilt up onto separate pages. On a different note, I was reading the entry for "Penistone" in one of those free online encyclopedias when I spotted something suprising. It said that Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Grommit, went to the Grammar School. Now I remember in an art class being told about someone who helped Nick Park with Wallace and Gromit going to the school, but never Nick Park himslef. Now I'm sure this is a mistake in the encyclopedia, but does anyone know for sure...have I missed something???

What a wonderful site. Just came across looking for links with my family history. Not asking for help but would like to say my great grandparents lived at 3 Woodland View in the early 1920's when my great aunt was baptised this was their address. My g.grandma was Milly Beever before her marriage to Joseph Bond. He later became a local road roller which my mother remambers him coming home for his dinner and parking it outside their house. By looking at your old map I was able to see just where they lived - Bank House, Low Millhouse, Leapings. My other grandma was 'in service' at Bull House Hall. It would be nice to see some more old photo's please!

Hi there i have to say thank you for all the information and fantastic photo's there is even one with my house and back garden. I am the chairman of Penistone & District Angling Club, which was founded in 1964 and has had a hard time over the last 10 years or so. We lost cubley top pond when the woods were shut to the public, we then lost cubley bottom pond otherwise known as the brewery pond about 1 year after the bungalow below the dam wall was sold to a builder and he bought the pond and stopped the club useing it. we then lost the river at oxspring when the houses were built at the bottom of bower hill on the old mill area, the fishing rights were given to oxspring parish council. i would love it if you could help a local club that runs on a none profit basis. hope to hear from you soon Kevin Trickett.

The Market Street additions in November are very good. Every shop and building contains such a diverse history. Maybe some budding historians can help out by providing more information on the buildings and their occupants. I know that Jack keeps this site going because of the affection he has for the town and I for one thank him for that.

This is from a guestbook entry of the 11th November... "What's all this about a train disaster or two on the viaduct back in the 1880's. I'd like to see some photos / read some details..." OK.. now this is not my website, but I visit fairly often, I read the guestbook and I have replied to a few. The message quoted above irritated me from the moment I read it. I know about the incidents mentioned, but you know what, I cannot think of one reason to reply. Maybe Jack will think it appropriate to delete the message and my reply, or maybe let it stay here as an example of how not to write in a guestbook. The key word being "Guest". I will leave it at that before I too become guilty.

I have just stumbled across your site and it is excellent. I have been researching my maternal grandmother's side of my tree for the past 4 months and I visited Penistone with her and my mum in about 1963 to visit my grandmother's family - the Roebuck family. I have information back to the 1700's but my main reason is to find any relatives of Hezekiah Roebuck and Ruth(nee Senior)and their family extending through their daughters Lily and Delia and thir son Albert, there were lots of others but only these had offspring that I know about. Some of the generations that may have connections are the Kellet, Brewer, Hadfield, Crowther, Webster, Downing families who are all in my tree as descendants of my g.g.grandfather Hezekiah. The photo of the Wesleyan Chapel Bible class is very good. My family were Netherfield Chapel but Doris Roebuck married a methodist minister Stanley Crowther so there may be someone that remembers some of these. Keep up the good work!

Logged on to your great site for the first time. The Railway Pictures were of most interest to me especially the view of Wortley Station showing the cherry Tree Cottages. This is where my Father was born in 1905 and my Grandfather Irvin Dearnley was the Signalman at the Signal Box. He was born at Ingbirchworth in 1861 and his father Abraham was a farmer,As well as working on the Railway all his life my Grandfather was a Stone Mason as were several of his brothers. Would love to hear from any relations from the area. I have done extensive research during the past 3 years and have a lot of information dating back to 1786

During the 56 years I lived in England, I consider myself fortunate in having traveled throughout the UK as well as many western european countries and several a little further east. I am now in Canada, and in the few years I have been here, I have already been to quite a few locations within Canada and the United States. From cities to small villages and isolated hamlets whether they be in the UK or elsewhere, there are always the same points of view. Many people wish to move to small villages, build a new house on a large lot then sit back and do their best to prevent others from doing the same. They will argue about over development and encroachment on nature. They will complain that the roads are becoming crowded and prices in the local stores are outrageous. There was no doubt a time when Penistone consisted of little more than a few simple wattle and daube huts and as such, they would have something in common with the birth of London. There are so many who wish to stop the urban spread but only after they have called the place home. As for gossip, it is not something peculiar to Penistone, but it does seem that it's intensity is inversely proportional to the size of the town or village. I know of one small English village where, the Doctor knows everyones ailments. The Policeman knows everyones crimes. The Banker knows their wealth and the Postman knows everything. Penistone will never be the same as it was when I was a young boy, and I guess our children will say the same. So just who is going to volunteer to leave Penistone in order to recapture times past, and just when, was the perfect time ? Here in Winnipeg I can see history repeating itself. Houses that were built miles from the city are now being absorbed into new sprawling developments. New roads are being built to accomodate even more cars. So let no one think Penistone stands alone. Just as we all get old and die, maybe somethings are inevitable.

dear lorrie king, do you not think that if there was no gossip there would be the town? the people who live there enjoy the local stories/gossip, so they're just finding out information which gets passed on throughout the surrounding vilages. we as a people are constructive, destructive, old and young. we simply talk to keep on top in a conversation. dont quite know why but its what we do. i feel that although penistone is small it shouldnt be over-populated, the council keep building housing estates which has a large demand on the local scenery. The extra houses are too new to such an old town.

An interesting website discovered by accident. However, perhaps I should not have been surprised to see messages from Sqn. Ldr. Peter Taylor OBE whose frequent contributions to the Barnsley Chronicle are often interesting and occasionally even informative. He does, however, seem to have an issue with Councillors Rowley and Punt although he does not explain his reasoning. Nor does he differentiate between the two men concerned. Councillor Rowley stands openly as a Conservative and makes no attempt to conceal his beliefs or allegiance – what you see is what you get. Councillor Punt on the other hand styles himself as an ‘Independent’, whatever that means, and when one reads the list of ‘Independents’ in Barnsley it looks as though someone has rounded up the usual suspects. There are former Labour councillors and Liberal Democrats, others who have espoused such lost causes as the Ratepayers and SDP, some all of the above and even a couple whose names I recognise as Conservative supporters – strange bedfellows indeed! Perhaps some hope to gain an advantage by concealing their beliefs and maybe others have no beliefs to conceal. But think on this. Next time you feel ill would you consult a medical practitioner who chose not to tell you whether he was a doctor, dentist, optician or snake-oil salesman?

I was introduced to this excellent site by my brother Paul Fieldsend who is also listed in this guestbook. I have been a resident of Penistone all my life. I have written poems / songs and a trilogy of novels, (all unpublished), over a 40 year period. The homepage link is for my website containing my written work. On this site there are the first 4 chapters of a trilogy of novels I wrote and a 5th that gives an impression of the novels at a later stage. Though the poems and songs make no reference to Penistone the novel itself is set in Penistone as representative of the world and society at large.

Moved to Penistone at four years old - started school there and left at age of ten to live in Royston. Now 51. Enjoyed every minute. Lived in Police Station as father was local bobby. I remember playing on the police motorbikes in the garage. Just like the ones on Heartbeat. We had stray dogs to look after almost every week and winters that went on for months. I've never seen snodrifts like them since. I remember sledging down the hill near the gas works and falling down a well that was covered with snow. Happy days.

Warren, If you go even further back Penistone has also lost it's major employer; David Browns, along with the vinegar works, the bottling plant for stout, railway wagon repair works, Hawley's sawmill, the gas works, one or two more small units and of course the London/Manchester railway line and its passenger station and goods yard. Thirty/fourty years ago you could buy anything you needed; food, clothing and the full range of household goods without leaving market street and the high street. What can you buy now? What investment has Barnsley MBC directed Penistone's way to make up for the loss of a very diverse economic base? I can't see any. Perhaps Penistone's longest serving councillor could enlighten us before he stands down or is voted of the council in 7 weeks time. Penistone has now become nothing more than a large housing estate.

I've just come back to uni from Penistone after my Easter break. I found your page on the protest and problems with Barnsley Council and interesting read. I have read many of the letters and articles in the local (and national) newspapers regarding these incedents over the Town Hall, Scout Dike and the cattle market and heard what several other local people feel about the situations. I have to say the views you put across are spot on with what Penistone people are thinking generally. I just hope the upcoming local elections will bring about a change for the better with Barnsley council, not just in and for Penistone, but for the whole Barnsley area. Many people on the council give the impression they feel they can do what they like, and some of the non- elected officers are even worse (anyone who's read the letters in the Barnsley Chronicle recently will know who I mean). They all need to be shown it's the Penistone and Barnsley people who have the power by voting them out and bringing new blood to the council. The whole area is full of history. This needs to be preserved, alongside progress; not replaced and forgotten about as presently seems to be happening. The countryside and buildings are amazing and the cattle market was one of the few remaing links to the past. I have links to farming families in the area from over the last few hundreds of years. Some of them may even have fought for the market's creation in the first place. I'd hate to think what they would have to say now it's been closed down. The problems in the area don't just lie with the Council. The Labour MP for the area isn't much better. I think he feels it's more important to be opposing the Labour government on many issues that would, in general, benefit the people in his constituancy, or in wasting money on busing people down to London for protests. Alot of changes are needed in the area if Penistone is to be able to survive and remain the small, freindly community in which I and many of my ancestors have grown up in.

Penistone will continue to be ignored by the Barnsley MBC policy makers until it is represented by a significant number of labour councillors. I'm personally pleased it isn't. Unfortunately in my view you are badly served by two of your councillors Punt & Rowley who seem to be rather keen on ingratiating themselves with the ruling group, not necessarily for the benefit of Penistone. At the forthcoming elections people with the drive and commitment of the likes of Maureen Harrison need to be elected.

Jack makes several references to actions that are summed up with this text. The Death of Common Sense Today we mourn the passing of a friend by the name of Common Sense. Common sense lived a long life but died from heart failure. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, factories and offices. He helped folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness. For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in out of the rain, the early bird gets the worm, and life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second. A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including, body piercing, whole language, ebonics and new math. His health declined when he became infected with the "If it only helps one person it's worth it" bug. In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing federal regulation. He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. Common Sense knew the end was near when Schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies Reports of six-year-old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate A teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch A teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student Schools need parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but cannot inform the parent when a student is pregnant or wants an abortion. Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports. Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low-flow toilets, smart guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory air bags. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son Reason. Three stepbrothers survive him: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner. Not many attended his funeral unfortunately, because so few realize he is gone.

Hi. Great pages. I am now starting to learn something. British Steel merged with Hoogovens and created a Anglo-Dutch company called CORUS. Since it is registered in the UK and run by the British, it is fairly reasonable to say, the British firm CORUS. (it was a takeover by any other name) http://www.corusgroup.com/home/index.cfm

'Ey up. Now I'm very nostalgic after visiting this website, having lived in Penistone from birth till the age of 15 when I emigrated downunder with my parents and sister. We (Firth family) lived on the High Street where my mother owned a hairdressing salon "Brenda's Boutique". The photos are great - not a lot has changed and I last visited the UK in 1980! I have 3 Aussie daughters who are desperate to see snow, so hopefully a visit to Penistone in the not too distant future will fulfill that wish, plus we'd love to catch up with the relatives (mainly Crookes family) and old school friends, and bring my 78 year old Dad back for a pint in the Spread! - cheers, Kay

Having moved to Penistone from the USA, pretty town, mostly nice folks. I did however notice an almost addiction to gossip, speculation, and just outright making up what you dont know about people. I have seen similar situations in small towns in the US, but not like I did there. Hopefully it will eventually die down or those that gossip will find something more constructive to do with their time, like visit the local library, wonderful place, great staff expand your mind, not your gossip tales.

Has anyone seen the Powergen adverts for the national weather after the 6:30 ITV news? It features comedian Simon Day from the Fast Show and in the background are windmills. They are the windmills in Thurlstone that neighbours Penistone. I watched them filming it, there were 4 huge trucks their, I thought they were making another film their after An Angel for May (very good film). If anyone wants me to email them the adverts then I will be glad to.
