Local Lass
Kate Rusby was brought up in Cawthorne, about four miles from Penistone, and is doing very well in the world of folk singing. She has performed all over the country, more than once in sell-out Penistone town hall concerts. She has been on stage from being very young, helping her singer dad. Now she is herself a folk singer of some merit and is making occasional appearances on TV and radio in the UK.
I remember her serving me with egg, chips and beans at the Spencer's Arms in Cawthorne before she became well-known and swapped the pinny for the guitar. I'll bet she would rather you did not know that. Good job she does not know me. She is also an old school friend of 'our Karen', my niece, from Shelley High School days.
Here are some frame-grabs of Kate from BBC4's 'Folk Awards 2004' show, organised with BBC Radio 2 and presented by Mike Harding and Mary Ann Kennedy. Kate performed her own song 'Underneath the Stars' to a packed audience and was nominated for at least three prizes. Various high calibre celebrities awarded prizes, including Kate herself, Joan Baez, Ralph McTell, assorted folk singers, a rather tipsy Stephen Fry and politicians Estelle Morris and the late Robin Cook.

I found her again on BBC4 tv with her own hour-long show 'Kate Rusby in Concert' from Leeds City Varieties. In fact, Kate pops up all over the place on radio and TV. Her merchandise and records can be found at Penistone's Pure Records studio. Here are some links:
