More Info on Penistone

Penistone Line Partnership
Supports activities for the Huddersfield, Penistone, Sheffield railway line. Notably the on-train Jazz or Folk nights with Black Sheep beer (good stuff if it isn't shaken about too much). They also plan interesting, station-to-station walks and, of course, there's always a convenient pub near the railway station.

PLP details can be found in the Clothier's Arms at Stocksmoor (a real ale pub with good food), Penistone cinema foyer and at Penistone library. Newish website flash animations - but little mention of Penistone so far.

Contact: PLP, St. John's Community Centre, Church St., Penistone, Sheffield, South Yorks, S36 2PB. Phone/fax 01226 370338.

Don't tell them the old railway line will re-open in a few years.

Pengeston 6933 - meets 3rd Wednesday of month. Initiations - April.
Penistone lodge was established in the Masonic Hall, Town Hall building, Shrewsbury Rd. on 3rd Jan 1919. Well-known dapper men with little cases.

The Buffs
The 'Royal Antedeluvian Order of Buffalos' RAOB 509 - not nudists as you might have thought. Their old regalia of bull's horns, etc. was upstairs in the Spread Eagle, 8pm Tuesdays. Was Noah a member? There was never a 'Postdeluvian Order'. It is possible that they have closed down in Penistone now.

St. Andrew's Church
St. Andrews(Methodist & URC) High Street, next door to the library. A modern church, spacious and light, unlike the former dark and dingy St. Pauls Methodist Chapel, which was demolished after woodworm infestation.

Combined with Netherfield Congregational Church, which was sold off for flats and the old St. Pauls was demolished. That wonderful old Methodist, John Wesley, gave Christendom all its best hymns.

Grindavik - Penistone's (nominal) Twin Town
One of my correspondents asked me why I did not include a reference to our Icelandic twin town of Grindavik. I can't find any info on it and I think it has all fizzled out now (2007). Here's what Grindavik looks like... http://www.grindavik.is/ (Icelandic language)
