with references to the 1997 'Housing Needs Survey'.
7,000 - Penistone town
3,350 - Hoylandswaine, Thurlstone and Millhouse Green
- with the 'remaining 11% scattered over a wide area'
Calculates to about 11,630 - but 11,550 is also quoted in the same document.
NB. Recent boundary changes have put anywhere east of the viaduct into the 'Penistone East' area. The quoted population for both east and west areas is given as around 10,400 after the boundary changes take place.

Employment
(2006) Local employment is difficult to obtain and housing costs are climbing. Many Penistone people work in Barnsley, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Leeds or local area towns such as Stocksbridge. A proposed Tesco will provide a few jobs but others will be lost as local shops close. Continuing building work provides a few jobs.
Rainfall
From Environmental Agency handbook for the River Don. Figures (Ingbirchworth):
Annual Average 38.58" - 980mm
Minimum 26.33" - 669mm
Maximum 48.3" - 1227mm
Broadcasts
National TV and some local radio is transmitted from the 700+ foot mast of Emley Moor transmitting station, about six miles northwest of Penistone and a prominent landmark. The lift takes about eight minutes to go up or down and the top of the tower sways by perhaps a foot each way in a light wind. There are some other transmitters for utilities and amateur radio. Emley Moor is not open to the public.

Emley Moor radiates 'freeview' digital tv channels and most of these are also available from satellite as 'Freesat'. The terrestrial digital channels are placed in between the old analogue ones and the same UHF aerial can (usually) be used for both types of transmission. There is also a good variety of digital radio channels either from DAB radio (approx. 200Mhz - the old 'Band II') and from digital TV channels. These are all free-to-air. The Penistone area generally enjoys good local radio and TV reception.
BBC national radio stations on VHF/FM - Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4 - are transmitted from the lattice tower of Holme Moss near Holmfirth. The nearest AM transmitter is at Pole Moor, near Huddersfield.
