The Rose and Crown
The Rose and Crown is clean, comfortable and inviting, with a wide range of drinks, tea, coffee and snacks. After a successful run by Marriane ('Maz') as landlady, Simon was the 'good lad from Sheffield' and a qualified chef. He kept things going nicely but there was a rapid change of hands in December 2009 and it settled down under new management in 2010.
Food is back early afternoons every day but Sunday, with cooked breakfasts, sandwiches and other meals. Unfortunately, they no longer cater for the Saturday morning shoppers before 12pm. The beer is generally good and there is sometimes a 'mild' available. I can recommend the Abbot Ale. They also have the usual lagers and both Strongbow and Bulmers ciders. They also have five rooms for guests and Bed & Breakfast is advertised.
There is an extended beer garden which catches the sun, a smoker's corner and a good car park. As with all of Penistone's pubs, it is a friendly place and a good place to meet up with local people. The Rose and Crown is a favourite choice for big football matches on the big TV projection screen. It is often lively on an evening but your conversation won't be drowned out by too loud background music.
In May 2008 the Rose and Crown had a major refurbishment. It was a good effort too. The Shrewsbury road door was made smaller and a patio door fitted in the lounge area, for easy access to the beer garden (and smokers' corner). It looks much less cluttered now. Carpets were replaced throughout and the part of the floor near Market Street door was tiled. Walls were re-painted, a new TV appeared on the wall by the pool table, new picture frames went up and new tables and chairs arrived to complete the picture.
2008 Pictures
From the Market street entrance, the first picture (top left) is in the snug, a quiet side room suitable for rendesvous of various kinds; a kind of snogging corner. From near the Market Street door, you can see the dance area and a fancy jukebox that looks like Blackpool Illuminations. Swivelling my head round, I see the pool table and a TV which is great for the footie. The view of one of the three sides of the bar area ("Does my bum look big in this?") is again from near the Market Street door.
The spacious lounge area (as I call it anyway) is close to the car park/beer garden door. It used to be a bit cramped in this part before. The door in the darker corner of the right picture goes into the 'Gents' and, in the below-left picture, the door goes into a kitchen. The last two are of the beer garden and the smokers' gazebo.
