Public Houses - The Rose & Crown

The End of an Era
Rose and Crown This little piece of history is lost to us now as a public house. The pub has sadly closed down, its fittings have been removed and new walls have been put in. In April 2011, planning permission was submitted for a change of use from a public house into an office block. By June the builders were in doing their work. Dransfields solicitors are to move in from their very old home next to Robinson's News by the church. It is not clear what will happen to their old place.

Here is a view through the window in June 2011. Now this page has been moved from its old place in the tour of Penistone to the History section. The text has been retained for the time being, as though it was still in use as a public house.

The Rose and Crown
The Rose and Crown is another very old pub in Penistone. After a successful run by Marriane ('Maz') as landlady it was taken over by Simon, the 'good lad from Sheffield' and a qualified chef. He kept things going nicely and provided some good and popular meals but there was a rapid change of hands in December 2009. It settled down under new management early in 2010. Unfortunately, the new people didn't open as much or as early as the previous ones. The doors might still be locked at 1pm on a Sunday when all the other pubs had been open for a while. Also there is little chance of food (even for an overnight guest staying for 'bed & breakfast'), although they did on one occasion supply a sandwich for a hungry toper.

There is an extended beer garden which catches the sun, a smoker's corner and a good car park. The Rose and Crown is a popular choice for watching big football matches on TV. It is often lively on an evening but your conversation won't be drowned out by too loud background music, even if some conversations might be a bit 'colourful' for some people's taste.

In May 2008 the Rose and Crown had a major refurbishment. It was a very good effort too. The Shrewsbury road door was made smaller and a patio door fitted in the lounge area, for easy access to the beer garden (and smokers' corner). It looks much less cluttered now. Carpets were replaced throughout and the part of the floor near Market Street door was tiled. Walls were re-painted, a new TV appeared on the wall by the pool table, new picture frames went up and new tables and chairs arrived to complete the picture.

From the Market street entrance, the first picture (top left) is in the snug, a quiet side room suitable for rendesvous of various kinds; a kind of snogging corner. From near the Market Street door, you can see the dance area and a fancy jukebox that looks like Blackpool Illuminations. Swivelling around, there is a pool table and TV. The view of one of the three sides of the bar area ("Does my bum look big in this?") is again from near the Market Street door.

The spacious lounge area (as I call it anyway) is close to the car park/beer garden door. The door in the darker corner of the right picture goes into the 'Gents' and, in the below-left picture, the door goes into a kitchen. The last two are of the beer garden and the smokers' gazebo.
