The Old Lock-up
The first picture shows Penistone's old lock-up as it was in 2007. Now (April 2010) the builders have been demolishing the old buildings and the wall and knocking this area into a new shape, ready to build some modern red-brick dwellings and a roundabout for the new 'food supermarket'. On the weekend of 26th & 27th March, probably for the first time in more than a century, stones were removed from Penistone's historic jailhouse and it was possible to look inside (Joe Pinguey's picture in the middle). The third picture shows the state of demolition on Weds 7th April 2010. It has been estimated that the recovered Yorkshire stone would have been worth at least £100,000. My thanks to Joe for his photo.

My camera was in the right place and at the right time when I took the lower two pictures. They show two chambers side by side which correspond to the two holes in Joe's picture. The eerie green glow was a chance reflection from machinery. Later that same day it was all reduced to rubble, amply demonstrating the developers' attitude to Penistone's heritage. On the same weekend, Penistone Parish Church put up a 'For Sale' sign, to suggest that nothing is sacrosanct in the modern age of developers.
