Probably the best local events list (better than Ents24). Re-load the page for updates (Highlighted) but note that this website is not optimised for mobile devices. The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts community events.

To have your own event noticed by the public and listed here, just put up posters around Penistone, in shops, cafes, the Co-op noticeboard, Tesco noticeboard and Community Centre noticeboard. Bring your information to the public, not the other way around. Don't rely on people looking for your website or Facebook - it is up you to make the effort, not your potential visitors. Include the following and make it readable:

Top   The Paramount
Our great hall of entertainment was described upon its grand opening in 1914 (a year after the Library next door) as 'Penistone's Coliseum.' The 1917 Penistone Almanack had this line: 'Town Hall - the Cinema of Penistone; the House of Comfort; the House of Health; the House of Clean Amusement.' As an assembly hall, theatre and cinema, our Town Hall has had a long and useful history and was at one time threatened with closure by Barnsley council. Penistone Paramount (Facebook).

For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm, or when shows are running. Tickets: Adult from 15 years and above, Concessions for Child aged 2 to 14 years old (accompanied by a adult in the circle) and Seniors 60+ where applicable, see Ts & Cs. Family tickets are also available. Not all events have concessions available. Occasional 'Relaxed Screenings' are free and have no loud adverts or trailers and the lights stay on dimly so that you can find your seat in the dark.

Film prices in 2025 were: (Online) Adult £7.50, Concessions (for young and old, stalls only) £6.50. Other tickets vary according to the event. Please note that cash sales incur a £1 surcharge and online bookings have a 65p per ticket charge, see FAQs. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, be of any value and have no expiry date. Proof of age may be requested for 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films.

By arrangement, wheelchair users can gain access (with friends) via a side door, given enough notice. For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 when shows are on. Recorded schedule on 76 2004. Via 'Friends of Penistone Paramount' you can Sponsor a Seat as a fund-raiser, £250 for three years with a little name plate on the seat. Paramount-branded Sweatshirt Hoodies are £35 from the Box Office and they also have Paramount-branded jumpers and hats for sale. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) icons in the listings below have links going to their rating descriptions. For more about any films see IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Top   Themed Saturday Markets
New for 2026, BMBC Markets is holding themed Saturday markets in the four market venues, with ours in the Market Barn. Themed Saturdays won't affect the usual busy Thursday Markets in Penistone. See BMBC Local Markets for dates. Potential stall-holders can email them at Place Management.

One wonders why they chose a Soviet-style naming convention for what normal people would call 'Arts and Crafts.'
Definition of 'Collective' (n): Factory, farm, etc. run on the principles of Collectivism, the theory that the state should own all means of production (Collins English Gem Dictionary). Oh dear, somebody at Barnsley Markets has gone off on one.

April April is named from the latin 'Aprilis' meaning 'to open.'     Regular monthly and weekly events are at the bottom of this page.    Top (Calendar)
This Month

April Fool's Day, The Lord Leautenant, Shooting Stars, Possibly the PTC Annual Town Assembly, and St George's Day.

Weds 1st All Fools Day - And there's likely to be a good spaghetti harvest this year.
,,   ,, Wortley Top Forge (History talk) - 1.45pm, Community Centre. Admission £4 (Members £3), includes tea and biscuit. Jan Brown looks at 400 years of the oldest surviving water-driven iron forge. All welcome. Pen Archive and History Gp (Fb), H Talks.
Fri 3rd, BH Good Friday - A movable feast day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the most important day on the church calendar. In the UK, both Good Friday and Easter Monday are Bank (national) Holidays. In the old days, real eggs (not chocolate) were decorated as gifts for Easter and they still do that in Poland. The mark of the cross on Hot Cross buns was said to preserve the left-over buns from going off, but the 'use by' date is more reliable. The Good Friday timetable for Penistone St John's church might look sonething like this (TBC):
  • 10am - 'Messy Church' in Penistone Church with the Mayor or Deputy Mayor of Penistone.
  • Following on (in the churchyard) - Traditional Flour Ceremony (see next item below) where Penistone Mayor distributes flour to the Poor of the Parish.
  • 10.30am - Easter Story and cups of tea in the church.
  • 11am - Procession of the Cross ('Walk of Witness'). An inter-denominational procession which anyone can join. The route and direction changes from year to year but it often starts outside the Tesco. Clergy and members of all local churches will take part. It would typically proceed through the Market Barn to hold prayers outside the former Cherrydale Chinese take-away, Market street. Watch for free Hot Cross buns offered to the public.
  • 2 pm - Liturgy of the Cross service in Penistone Church.
The bags of flour for the ceremony are kindly donated by Penistone Tesco. Old Customs, Penistone & Thurlstone Team Ministry, (Fb).
,,   ,, Traditional Flour Ceremony - Following the 10am Good Friday service, go to the Lower Churchyard ('Sensory Garden'), Penistone Church. this is a centuries-old custom. All may attend. In 1559, local landowner William Turton bequeathed to each of 'The Poor of the Parish of Penistone' a bag of rye flour to be doled out every Good Friday from the church. The details of the bequest can be found on a large panel inside the church. The flour ceremony was originally conducted at the Church door by the vicar. After Penistone Town Hall was built in 1914 (now Paramount), it moved to 'the Town Hall steps' with the Town Clerk doing the honours, with a blessing by the vicar. Somewhere along the line, rye flour was substituted by wheat flour and the event crossed the road again into the 'Sensory Garden.' In modern times, The Penistone Mayor or Deputy Mayor distributes bags of flour (usually donated by Tesco) as the vicar blesses the proceedings. Old Customs and Penistone & Thurlstone Team Ministry, (Fb).

They say: 'Penistone Spring Market is coming on Saturday 4th April, bringing a day of crafts, seasonal stalls and family fun' and claim: 'Kids' crafts, Wide range of seasonal stalls, Cakes and bakes, Ice cream van and Live entertainment.' See the section above this table for the Themed Saturday Markets. Should be good but, following a run of bad weather and poor turnouts, Penistone's Saturday markets had been cancelled in early March by BMBC, kyboshing Beryl's Bunnies charity for no obvious reason. They held a weakly-advertised public consultation on Facebook (21st Feb), abetted by this website. Themed Saturdays do not affect the busy Thursday Markets in Penistone.
,,   ,, University Boat Races - From 12.20pm, BBC television. The Races: 2:21pm (Women’s Boat Race) and 3:21pm (Men’s Boat Race). The Course: 4¼ miles on the River Thames from Putney to Mortlake. Fri 17th Twelfth Anniversary of the Dedication of the 'QEII Field in Trust' (Historical interest, 'the Showground Protected') - A plaque was unveiled on 17th April 2014 near Penistone Bowling Club by Penistone Mayor Cllr Jon Cutts, with Barnsley Mayor Cllr Ken Richardson, local council members, public and press, on a very windy day. A Royal Jubilee 2012 initiative was to preserve green spaces for future public use. Local people had voted overwhelmingly for the land to be protected from housing development - in perpetuity. The land had originally been donated to Penistone for recreational use but when BMBC assumed ownership of Penistone's assets (Local Government Reorganisation in 1974) they had plans to build a large housing estate there. A local resident saw those plans. BMBC also considered building a children's nursery on a corner of the recreation ground. Fortunately, the QEII scheme has rescued the land and we can enjoy the field which includes the Showground for as long as we like. Ya boo, Barnsley! Its use is now reserved solely for recreational purposes. Fields in Trust.
Sat 18th Public Auction (Fund-raiser) - 6.30pm to about 8pm, Penistone St John's church. Prize donations happily accepted for auction. Tea, coffee and bar available. Fund-raiser for church roof and tower repairs.
,,   ,, Coanda Effect (Band) - 8.30pm, Penistone Royal British Legion. Saturday night entertainment. Did they really mean the 'Coriolis Effect' (physics)? Oh, and you will be able to sit and read books. The 'Dransfield Cabinet' (walk-in local history section) is also back to its rightful home. BMBC Library News.
Thurs 23rd England's FlagSaint George's Day - Saint George is the patron saint for England, Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice. UK MPs have tried to make it a national holiday but without success. The old tradition is Dandelion Wine. Collect dandelion flowers and leaves (no stalks) on this day, wash them and dry them. Some recipes use only the yellow petals. You can't use the stalks unless you want to see them a second time. St George's Day.
Fri 24th Traveling Wilburys Tribute - 7.30pm, Penistone Paramount Theatre. Tickets. One hopes that they are nearer to being 'sound-alikes' than 'look-alikes but at least their 'Orbison' has a passing resemblance to the original. No doubt a great show with great music. Eye masks optional. Run time about 1hr 20mins. Penistone Paramount (Fb).

Mistakes are always possible (read 'likely') and information sources will often make changes, including cancellations and sometimes with weak publicity. You're on yer own, mate.

This website will not display properly on mobile phones and most tablets. It pre-dates them by some years but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and very fast page-loading on laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web masters consider them?). Although perhaps dated in style and too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that look good on the latest kit but will crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.). Anyway, who wants to read paragraphs of text on a phone?

Do not worry about the 'Not secure' icon on the address bar as this website is old-style HTTP and not the latest HTTPS for extra security, but that doesn't matter anway because it does not handle card payments, personal information, cookies or visitor tracking.
