Probably the best local events list (better than Ents24). Re-load the page for updates (Highlighted) and note that this website is not optimised for mobile devices. The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts the more important community events.

To have your own event noticed by the public and listed here, just put up posters around Penistone; in shops, cafes, Tesco and the Community Centre. Bring your information to the public, not the other way around. Don't rely on people looking for your website or Facebook to discover an event - it is up you to make an effort, not your potential visitors. Include the following on the poster and make it legible:

Advert for films

Top   The Paramount
Our great hall of entertainment was described upon its grand opening in 1914 (a year after the Library next door) as 'Penistone's Coliseum.' The 1917 Penistone Almanack had this line: 'Town Hall - the Cinema of Penistone; the House of Comfort; the House of Health; the House of Clean Amusement.' As an assembly hall, theatre and cinema, our Town Hall has had a long and useful history and was at one time threatened with closure by Barnsley council. Penistone Paramount (Facebook).

For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm, or when shows are running. Tickets: Adult from 15 years and above, Concessions for Child aged 2 to 14 years old (accompanied by a adult in the circle) and Seniors 60+ where applicable, see Ts & Cs. Family tickets are also available. Not all events have concessions available. Occasional 'Relaxed Screenings' are free and have no loud adverts or trailers and the lights stay on dimly so that you can find your seat in the dark.

Film prices in 2025 were: (Online) Adult £7.50, Concessions (for young and old, stalls only) £6.50. Other tickets vary according to the event. Please note that cash sales incur a £1 surcharge and online bookings have a 65p per ticket charge, see FAQs. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, be of any value and have no expiry date. Proof of age may be requested for 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films.

By arrangement, wheelchair users can gain access (with friends) via a side door, given enough notice. For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 when shows are on. Recorded schedule on 76 2004. Via 'Friends of Penistone Paramount' you can Sponsor a Seat as a fund-raiser, £250 for three years with a little name plate on the seat. Paramount-branded Sweatshirt Hoodies are £35 from the Box Office and they also have Paramount-branded jumpers and hats for sale. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) icons in the listings below have links going to their rating descriptions. For more about any films see IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

February   The month is named after a Roman feast 'Februa' and the only month with 'Brewery' in its name.  Top (Calendar).
This Month   This month has a Wedding showcase, History talks, Radio short-course, a Roman(tic) saint's day, a PACT meeting and Penistone's WC anniversary.
28th Jan
- Sun 1st
Wedding Showcase - All day up to 7pm, The Barn, Cubley Hall, Mortimer Road, Cubley, Penistone, S36 9DF. Visit the Barn, beautifully dressed up (not you) as it would be for a wedding. Explore the table décor, room layouts, drinks and menus; with everything but the shotgun for the big day. The wedding team will be there to chat and help plan your perfect day. To book an appointment with the wedding coordinator, please email: weddings@cubleyhall.co.uk. At Cubley Hall (Fb)
Mon 2nd Candlemas (historic interest) - An important date in the Christian calendar 40 days after 25th December, on 2nd February aka 'Groundhog Day' in the USA. An excuse for traditional sayings such as: "At 5 o'clock on Candlemas Day, You can see a white horse a mile away" or, "On Candlemas Day, a farmer should have half his corn and half his hay." Properly known as 'The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Jesus and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary' - but 'Candlemas' is easier.
Weds 4th 'Always a Little Further' (History talk) - 1.45pm, Community Centre. Admission £4 (Members £3), includes tea and biscuit. All welcome. Talk by Chris Tapster about the role of 45 Commando Royal Marines in the 1982 Falklands Campaign. Penistone Archive and History Group (Fb), History Talks.
,,   ,, Thurlstone Brass Band AGM - 7.30pm, Millhouse Institute, S36 9NA. One for the band members, their AGM. Thurlstone Brass Band (Fb).
,,   ,, Robert Vincent (Singer) - Cubley Hall, Mortimer Road, Cubley, Penistone, S36 9DF. Cubley Hall (Fb).
Sat 7th Steve Ridley (Singer) - 8.30pm, Penistone Royal British Legion. Non-members must be signed in and may not return the same month. RBL on Facebook.
Fri 13th
- Mon 23rd
School Holidays - Officially Mon 16th to Fri 20th in the BMBC area but they will break up on Fri 13th to return on Monday 23rd. School Dates.
Sat 14th Saint Valentine's Day - Always 14th February. Send a card or flowers to your misty-eyed loved one, or anonymously to someone you have the hots for to get them guessing ( = stalking ?). The origins go back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia in mid-February marking the start of spring, with fertility and marriage ceremonies, as you do. As Christianity spread to the UK it transmogrified into commemorating the martyred Roman priest Valientino who died around this time in AD 270, later to become known as Saint Valentine. That's why his day is properly named 'Saint Valentine's Day' and not forgetting to include the 'Saint' part unless you are very lazy.
  ,,   ,, St Valentine's Day Market - 8.30am to 2pm, Penistone Market Barn, S36 6AB. Rose's are red. Violet's are blue. Jenny's are orange.
,,   ,, 'Free Before Three' (Launch event) - 11am, Penistone FM Studios. This is an introduction to a new short-course to help reduce social isolation, gain new skills and interest people in radio station activities. Tea/coffee and biscuits provided. For those interested, the course would be eight weekly sessions of two hours each; an opportunity to learn hands-on broadcasting skills, presenting and speaking, interviewing local people using digital media, creating podcasts and short films, having fun and perhaps field trips to community organisations. If interested, call 764646 or email: studio@penfm.media first or you won't get into the studios. Event sponsored by 'The Better Barnsley Bond' and BMBC's 'Love Where You Live.'
,,   ,, Kirsty Brannan (Singer) - 8.30pm, Penistone Royal British Legion. Non-members must be signed in and may not return the same month. RBL on Facebook.

Sun 15th 'Candle-lit Romance' - 4pm, Penistone St John's Church, Market Place. Adults £20. An afternoon of words and music with The Fern String Quartet. Organised by the Friends of Penistone St John's Church.
Mon 16th Ninth Anniversary of Penistone's WC - There's little to celebrate in February but we do have one asset that is flushed with success, our Public Lavatory. On this date in 2017, Penistone Mayor Cllr Paul Hand-Davis officially tugged his chain of office to officially open Penistone's brand new WC. Councillors and on-lookers were awe-struck with admiration and bursting to try it out. At the same time, filming was going on in the Paramount and Vic Reeves (Jim Moir) was quite amused by our small-town motions. The former Ladies' loo had been renovated and opened as a super 20p-operated unisex loo with wheelchair access and baby-changing facilities. Also a magnet for bored children, although their vandalism is logged on CCTV. The nearby Gents' toilet had also been planned for improvement but the cost was too high, so now it is sealed as a DNA-loaded time capsule. The country needs more public toilets, which are useful for elderly shoppers, delivery people, those with stomach problems, mums with babies and non-pub-goers, and could help footfall to our shops. This puts us well ahead of Stocksbridge, Barnsley and Huddersfield, although Holmfirth has a nice stainless steel one, provided you leave before the self-cleaning cycle. Ask oneself: "How many towns still have a public loo?" Now wash your hands please.
Tues 17th Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) - It is still a strong tradition in the UK, 47 days before Easter Sunday on a Tuesday between 3rd February and 9th March ('Mardi Gras' in some countries). The day before Ash Wednesday starts the Lenten period of fasting when people give up rich foods such as eggs, butter and sugar for spiritual improvement. So, Pancake Day is a blow-out to use them up. Penistone's Pancake Bell tradition stopped until 2019 but is back with us, tolled from the church tower around dinnertime. 'Shrove' comes from the old word 'shrive' - to be given absolution (sins forgiven upon confession). Some Shrovetide traditions are Mob Football (Ashbourne) and mass skipping (Scarborough). Penistone Co-op has a special Pancake Day display: Eggs, Flour, Sugar, Maple Syrup, Golden Syrup and more (try orange marmalade with lemon juice). For eight pancakes you need 8 oz plain flour, two large eggs, one pint of milk and salt. Mix it well and let it stand for half an hour (as you would for Yorkshire puds). Or cheat with a pancake mix bottle, add milk, shake for one minute and let it rest. You need a hot pan with oil, fat or butter. Pour in enough mixture to coat the pan bottom, let it cook then flip it over for the other side if you can. It should be browned but not burnt. Add a drop more oil or fat as you go on. The pancake recipe goes as far back as 1439. Time and Date.
Weds 18th 'Sheffield, City of Sanctuary ' (History talk) - 1.45pm, Community Centre. Admission £4 (Members £3), includes tea and biscuit. All welcome. Talk by Tim Mulroy about immigration in the steel city. Penistone Archive and History Group (Fb), History Talks.
Fri 20th 'Fleeting Rumours' - Barn opens 7.30pm for 8pm start, Cubley Hall, Mortimer Road, Cubley, Penistone, S36 9DF. Tickets from £21 + Booking Fee, Cubley Hall Tickets (Fb). Good Fleetwood Mac tribute.

Mon 23rd PTC Ordinary Meeting - 7pm, Council Chamber, Shrewsbury Road, two doors up from the Paramount. See month's Agenda. This is the grass-roots local council and first port-of-call for residents' concerns, to be dealt with or passed on as appropriate. Public and Press may observe and record meetings, and ask questions (minuted) before the meeting starts (Openness Guide 2014 PDF icon) but can be excluded for defined purposes with a Resolution passed and the reason stated, in accordance with Public Bodies (Admissions to Meetings) Act 1960 (aPrivate Member's Bill from Mrs Thatcher). The author of 'Penistone Pictorial' does not accept responsibility for any inconvenience or consequential loss arising from the use of information provided by this website. Mistakes are always possible (read 'likely') and information sources will often make changes, including cancellations and sometimes with weak publicity. You're on yer own, mate.

This website will not display properly on mobile phones and most tablets. It pre-dates them by some years but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and very fast page-loading on laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web masters consider them?). Although perhaps dated in style and too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that look good on the latest kit but will crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.). Anyway, who wants to read paragraphs of text on a phone?

Do not worry about the 'Not secure' icon on the address bar as this website is old-style HTTP and not the latest HTTPS for extra security, but that doesn't matter anway because it does not handle card payments, personal information, cookies or visitor tracking.
