Probably the best local events list (better than Ents24). Re-load the page for updates (Highlighted) but note that this website is not optimised for mobile devices. The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts community events.

To have your own event noticed by the public and listed here, just put up posters around Penistone, in shops, cafes, the Co-op noticeboard, Tesco noticeboard and Community Centre noticeboard. Bring your information to the public, not the other way around. Don't rely on people looking for your website or Facebook - it is up you to make the effort, not your potential visitors. Include the following and make it readable:

Please note that Penistone Town Council meetings have now moved to the Community Centre in April, with building work having started in the Town Hall building.

Top   The Paramount
Our great hall of entertainment was described upon its grand opening in 1914 (a year after the Library next door) as 'Penistone's Coliseum.' The 1917 Penistone Almanack had this line: 'Town Hall - the Cinema of Penistone; the House of Comfort; the House of Health; the House of Clean Amusement.' As an assembly hall, theatre and cinema, our Town Hall has had a long and useful history and was at one time threatened with closure by Barnsley council. Penistone Paramount (Facebook).

For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm, or when shows are running. Tickets: Adult from 15 years and above, Concessions for Child aged 2 to 14 years old (accompanied by a adult in the circle) and Seniors 60+ where applicable, see Ts & Cs. Family tickets are also available. Not all events have concessions available. Occasional 'Relaxed Screenings' are free and have no loud adverts or trailers and the lights stay on dimly so that you can find your seat in the dark.

Film prices in 2025 were: (Online) Adult £7.50, Concessions (for young and old, stalls only) £6.50. Other tickets vary according to the event. Please note that cash sales incur a £1 surcharge and online bookings have a 65p per ticket charge, see FAQs. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, be of any value and have no expiry date. Proof of age may be requested for 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films.

By arrangement, wheelchair users can gain access (with friends) via a side door, given enough notice. For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 when shows are on. Recorded schedule on 76 2004. Via 'Friends of Penistone Paramount' you can Sponsor a Seat as a fund-raiser, £250 for three years with a little name plate on the seat. Paramount-branded Sweatshirt Hoodies are £35 from the Box Office and they also have Paramount-branded jumpers and hats for sale. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) icons in the listings below have links going to their rating descriptions. For more about any films see IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Top   Themed Saturday Markets
New for 2026, BMBC Markets is holding themed Saturday markets in the four market venues, with ours in the Market Barn. Themed Saturdays won't affect the usual busy Thursday Markets in Penistone. See BMBC Local Markets for dates. Potential stall-holders can email them at Place Management.

One wonders why they chose a Soviet-style naming convention for what normal people call 'Arts and Crafts.' Dictionary definition of 'Collective' (n): Factory, farm, etc. run on the principles of Collectivism; the theory that the state should own all means of production.' Besides silly names, it is a brave attempt to rejuvenate trade at Penistone's Saturday markets, which were badly affected by prolonged bad weather in Winter. In any case, charity stalls ought always to be allowed no matter what theme.

Always the first Sunday of May, a very old traditional event with smelly but drinkable spa water. Arrive early, bring a mug and folding chair and chat with the other imbibers. The sulphurous spa waters are held to have Miraculous Healing Powers for: scurvy, gout, baldness and worse (yes, that too!). In centuries past, farm workers and gentry would make a big occasion of it, often in a drunken and riotous procession led by the band. In the 1970s, a new surrounding wall was built and BMBC's Environment Health Officer declared the spa water as safe to drink (it contains traces of silver). Local Customs. There is a change this year, as Thurlstone Brass Band (Fb) says:
'Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to continue our 70-year tradition of our full band playing music and providing refreshments at the nearby lay-by. The blessing at the actual well at 2pm will still take place and a few players from the band will be there to accompany the hymns.'

Sun 10th Rogation Sunday (Historical note) - Rogation Sunday is the traditional day for boundary processions throughout the land. It is an ancient church festival on the fifth Sunday after Easter Day. Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days leading to Ascension Day) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing for a bountiful harvest and better spuds. The positions of parish boundaries were very important and could lead to disputes and skirmishes with neighbouring villages. The 'Beating of the Bounds' (Wikipedia) was an annual procession dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, long before good maps were available. It would be led by the local clergy with families tagging along. Their children would be whacked on the bum at each boundary stone to instill a knowledge of their locations. Health and Safety regulations seemed have intruded into that old tradition and now the kids can no longer remember the village boundaries. It is not an app on their smartphones. Few local boundary stones can be found now but the Hartcliff Greyhound Stone (listed at English Heritage) is one notable one to look for, built into the wall. Thanks to Penistone Round Table (Ladies' Circle) and others, an organised Boundary Walk usually takes place around this time, starting and finishing at Cubley Hall, where a boundary map can be found on display in the car park. See Customs page and the Diocese of York.

Raising funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance this year. Organised by Penistone Ladies' Circle. They suggest a £5 donation to Justgiving. Boundary Walk (Fb), Cubley Hall (Fb).
,,   ,, 'Bell Sunday' - The Central Council of Church Bell-ringers has designated this date for church bells to be rung throughout the land, as it is close to the Feast of St Dunstan (19th May). Penistone church bell-ringers willperform with our excellent eight bell carillon in the church tower, probably 7.30pm. Saint Dunstan was an Anglo-Saxon churchman, Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, blacksmith and bell-wright. He died in AD 988 and later became the Patron Saint of bell-ringers. Charles Dickens considered him to be a charlatan in 'A Child's History of England.' The Penistone church bell-ringers are always happy to recruit new members (see Alan Shelbourne) and can be heard every Thursday evening from 7.30pm. Not that you can ever work out what tune they are playing.

Mistakes are always possible (read 'likely') and information sources will often make changes, including cancellations and sometimes with weak publicity. You're on yer own, mate.

This website will not display properly on mobile phones and most tablets. It pre-dates them by some years but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and very fast page-loading on laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web masters consider them?). Although perhaps dated in style and too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that look good on the latest kit but will crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.). Anyway, who wants to read paragraphs of text on a phone?

Do not worry about the 'Not secure' icon on the address bar as this website is old-style HTTP and not the latest HTTPS for extra security, but that doesn't matter anway because it does not handle card payments, personal information, cookies or visitor tracking.
