What's On in the Penistone Area 2024

Penistone coat of armsThe best Events List for local events! Please re-load this page to see any updates (Highlighted). The little Penistone coat-of-arms depicts community events. To have your own event added here, just put up posters around Penistone; in Tesco and on the Community Centre noticeboard. Don't forget the essential details such as: What, Where, When, How much, Where from, Age limit, Restrictions, Contact details and Organiser's name. Also include the Day of the event, as not everyone carries a calendar.

Notable Events this year:

NB. Please note that errors are always possible on this website and this Events page. Details might be changed without notice or essential details omitted by the gormless events secretary ("Don't we always do it on that day?"). Also, any reticence about ticket prices will be because they are over-priced. Key: TBC = 'To be confirmed' and 'Fb' = Facebook link.

The Paramount - For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm or when shows are running. Free 'Relaxed Screenings' have a relaxed atmosphere without noisy adverts or trailers and lights are dimmed so you can still see the way to the loo. Go green by returning glasses to the bar. British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) Icons below are linked to guidance pages. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, can be of any value and have no expiry date. Paramount-branded sweatshirt hoodies are available from the Box Office for £35. The Paramount schedule can be heard on 76 2004. Penistone Paramount (Facebook).

Barnsley Chronicle - Please send your event notifications or local news items to Wayne Chadburn via Facebook or email: wayne.chadburn@outlook.com, and I will read them.

Cashless Events - Very convenient for events organisers but not in general as they effectively discriminate against parts of the community. Also, by reducing cash circulating in the community, more power is given to bankers to push for on-line transactions only and close branches. Then you are on the phone trying to sort out problems with operators who only work with tick lists, with neither the flexibility nor the power to correct mistakes. Then the line goes dead and you are back where you started. Not good. Many traders, market stalls, shops and cafes still use real money.

Spa ("Spaw") Sunday - Daytime, Gunthwaite Spa (map).Always on the first Sunday of May, a local tradition and community event where people imbibe the curative spa waters (bring a mug) and listen to Thurlstone Brass Band, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, weather permitting. This is a quirky and ancient tradition which often draws a good crowd. There is usually a tea and cake stall. For centuries, the sulphurous spa water of Gunthwaite were held to have Miraculous Healing Powers to cure: scurvy, gout, baldness and worse (yes, that too!). In centuries past, farm workers and the gentry made a big occasion of it, often in a drunken and riotous procession led by a band, as a rare break from working in the fields. At one time, the gentry banned the event when it became too much of a drunken free-for-all. Deep-rooted in local tradition it soon made its way back on the calendar. A new surrounding wall was built around the outlet pipe in the 1970s and BMBC's Environment Health Officer 'passed' the water as safe to drink. Local Customs.
,,   ,, Rogation Sunday (Historical note) - Rogation Sunday is the traditional day for boundary processions throughout the land. It is an ancient church festival on the fifth Sunday after Easter Day. Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days leading to Ascension Day) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing for a bountiful harvest and better spuds. The positions of parish boundaries were very important and could lead to disputes and skirmishes with neighbouring villages. The 'Beating of the Bounds' (Wikipedia) was an annual procession dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, long before good maps were available. It would be led by the local clergy with families tagging along. Their children would be whacked on the bum at each boundary stone to instill a knowledge of their locations. Health and Safety regulations seemed have intruded into that old tradition and now the kids can no longer remember the village boundaries. It is not an app on their smartphones. Few local boundary stones can be found now but the Hartcliff Greyhound Stone (listed at English Heritage) is one notable one to look for, built into the wall. Thanks to Penistone Round Table (Ladies' Circle) and others, an organised Boundary Walk usually takes place around this time, starting and finishing at Cubley Hall, where a boundary map can be found on display in the car park. See Customs page and the Diocese of York.

Grown ups get beers, etc. After Dark activities from 4pm include stilts and fire performers to 7pm, adult magician 6pm to 8pm. Also Matt Stephens (live music) 4pm to 6pm. Sunday Sould from 6pm to 9pm. DJ after that. Beyond Wayne C's good efforts in the Barnsley Chronicle, rather weak publicity to be found.   ,,   ,, The Eta Aquarids (meteor shower) - Look up in the early hours of Monday, but this is only a minor event. The meteor shower will occur over several days peaking on 5th to 6th May. Penistone Paramount Film Tickets - Film ticket prices have been steady since 2016 but, due to increasing costs, had to be increased from 15th March 2024. New prices: Adults £7.50; Concessions (stalls only): £6.50. That's just a pound more than before and still good value. Also, booking charges have been waived. Film ticket prices in 2012 were: Adults - £5.50, Concessions (stalls only) - £4.50, so that is not a bad record. Paramount (Fb).

Although perhaps dated in style and far too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that might look good on the latest kit but crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.).
