What's On in the Penistone Area 2025

Penistone coat of armsEvents Stuff:
This is probably the best listing for local events and much better than Ents24. Please re-load the page for updates (Highlighted). The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts a more important community event. To have your own event listed here, just put up posters around Penistone shops, cafes, Tesco and the Community Centre. Don't just rely on just your own website as there are trillions of those and nobody will know to look at yours. Don't rely just on a QR code either; they don't always work. Include the basics on the poster: What, Where, When, Ticket Price (Where from), Restrictions, Contact Details and Organiser's name. Please include Day of the Week for convenience.

Advert for filmsThe Paramount - Penistone Paramount (Facebook).
Our great hall of entertainment has been Penistone's pearl for over a century, described as 'Penistone's Coliseum' upon its opening in 1914.
A 1917 advert in the Penistone Almanac: 'Town Hall the Cinema of Penistone; The House of Comfort; The House of Health; The House of Clean Amusement.'

For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm, or when shows are running. Film prices are: (Online) Adult £7.50, Concessions (for young and old, stalls only) £6.50, cash sales incur a £1 surcharge, FAQs. Family tickets available. Other tickets vary according to the event. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, be of any value and have no expiry date. Where possible, concession tickets are for over-60s and under-15s. Proof of age may be requested for 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films. Under-16s in the circle must be accompanied by an adult. Free 'Relaxed Screenings' have a relaxed atmosphere without loud adverts or trailers and lights stay dimly on so you can still find the loo.

By arrangement, wheelchair users can gain access (with friends) via a side door, given enough notice. For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 when shows are on. Recorded schedule on 76 2004. Via 'Friends of Penistone Paramount' you can Sponsor a Seat, £250 for three years with a little name plate on the seat. Paramount-branded Sweatshirt Hoodies are £35 from the Box Office. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) icons in the listings below are linked to their rating descriptions. For more about films see IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Cashless Events
Very convenient for lazy organisers but discriminatory against parts of the community (which might be deliberate). Reducing cash-flow gives power to bankers to restrict services, close banks and charge fees. Most traders, market stalls, charities, shops and cafes will still use real money, as do real people.

Sun 8th
Barnsley's 'Love Where You Live' Week ('See what is happening in your area') - An expensive splurge in the Barnsley Chronicle covered two full pages, supported by lots of fuss and bother on social media, as though it is a big week for happenings. You might expect some real whiz-bang events, carnivals, bands and other community events throughout the borough. Alas, it is a damp squib; just the usual library-based happenings which occur anyway. They didn't include the Penistone Parade and Gala. All we had for Penistone was a Citizen's Advice session, 9am to noon, Wednesday in the Library, as with any normal week. 'What's (not) on in your area.'
Weds 4th 'Beyond The Blue Horizon' (History talk) - 1.45pm Registration for 2pm start, St John's Church, Penistone. £4 (Members £3), includes tea and biscuit. A talk on 'The Golden Years of Air Travel' presented by Mike Ogden. All welcome. Penistone History Archive Group's history talks are on the first and third Wednesday of every month except during August. Penistone History Archive (Fb), History Talks.
Fri 6th Oxspring Duck Race - 6pm, Bower Dell (Picnic spot down by the hump bridge), Oxspring. Not widely advertised but a family-friendly event which has stood the test of time. Buy a plastic duck or multiple ducks (not real ducks) £1 each and get a numbered ticket like a raffle. You give your duck or ducks names so that you can shout for them. The ducks are launched down the River Don where you will encourage them by willpower alone, as shouting has no effect yet feels good. Also: Bouncy castle, raffle, food, drinks, games, good prizes and Barbecue (no veggie?). Winning ducks win good prizes. Proceeds to the organisers, Oxspring Primary School PTA. Event sponsored by D.R. Baling wire manufacturer of Oxspring (former Winterbottom's). Oxspring Primary School Duck Race.
Sat 7th PLP'From Old to New' (Guided Walk, about 8-10 miles) - 8.42am train to Wombwell (Sheffield Platform) from Penistone Station, returning later from Elsecar station (check Train Times - pdf). Unusually, the route has not been described on the Penline page but it is a long way and should be a good one. Don't forget to dress for the weather and wear stout boots. Take some food and drink with you, although there might be a pub somehwere near the end. This is one of a series Guided Walks organised by Penistone Line Partnership.

Penistone Town Council (Fb).
Tues 24th The Nativity of St John (Historic Note). Penistone parish church is dedicated to St John the Baptist whose Feast, Festival or Nativity is always 24th June, six months before Christmas Eve. It is also the origin of the old 'Penistone Feast' when a church fair and 'Penistone Sing' would take place, and perhaps also a funfair around the same time. Besides Christmas, this is the only church calendar event celebrating a birth rather than a death, hence the 'Nativity of St John.' In AD 506, the Council of Agde listed it as amongst the highest feast days when the faithful would attend Mass and abstain from servile work. The Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:36, 56 - 57) states that John was born about six months before Jesus. Penistone's annual church fair is always in June.

This website displays poorly on mobile devices. It pre-dates them by some time but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and fast page-loading on most tablets, laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web designers even consider smart televisions?). Although perhaps dated in style and far too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that might look good on the latest kit but crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.).

Do not worry about the 'Not secure' icon on the address bar as this website is old-style HTTP and not the latest HTTPS for extra security. It does not need to be anyway, as this website is not interactive. It does not handle payments, personal information, cookies, visitor tracking nor does it try to sell anything.
