Penistone coat of armsEvents Stuff:
This is probably the best listing around for local events and much better than Ents24. Please re-load the page for updates (Highlighted). Please note that this website is not intended for mobile devices as it pre-dates them. The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts a more important community event.

To have your own event listed here, just put up posters around Penistone in shops, cafes, Tesco and Community Centre. Bring the information to the public, not the other way around. Don't rely on your own website or Facebook as there are trillions and people won't know to look at yours. Do please include the basics on your poster and make it clearly readable through a steamy shop window (not blue text on black background, for example):

,,   ,, toffee appleGuy Fawkes' Night (Historic note) - The fifth of November is the actual night when the nation remembers The Gunpowder Plot, a 17th century attempt at terrorism, but the nearest weekend is usually more convenient for families to enjoy their bonfires. Go back in time and for more than a century Penistone and every other church tolled the bells on Bonfire Night, as required by law (now repealed), to remind people of what happens to those who try to blow up Parliament with a King inside. We still actively commemorate this historic event as a national activity, although some lesser-educated people literally 'Lose the Plot' if they call it 'Fireworks Night' (d'uh!). We will expect bright flashes, whooshes and loud bangs to add to the enjoyment and community spirit. The traditional treats for Bonfire Night are toffee apples and parkin but some people will put washed potatoes in the embers for jacket spuds. Every street had bonfires and fireworks a few decades ago, before double-glazing, with random explosions and bright flashes from cheap Chinese fireworks all over the place, if you could find them (BBC news was helpful). Schoolkids would carry bundles of bangers, jumping jacks and catherine wheels in their pockets and be warned about it at school before those fireworks were banned. Bonfires were built by young lads, who might rob wood from rival bonfires. These days, pampered pets might be frightened, accustomed as they are to peace and tranquility in their double-glazed cocoons but they might be more alarmed by their nervous owners' reactions than the bangs outside. Killjoys would ban thunderstorms if they could. You can visit the heights of Royd Moor on the evening and see the many bonfires and fireworks in the distance.
All together now: "Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November; Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. I see no Reason why Gunpowder, Treason, Should ever be Forgot." 'Celebrating Bonfire Night,' Gunpowder Plot and the Bonfire Night page.

Opens 6.15pm with Angel Voices choir, 7pm buffet, 7.30pm Awards Ceremony. The event concludes with the Angel Voices choir. The Awards: in September this year, Penistone Ward Alliance launched 'Volunteer Awards 2025' to recognise volunteers in BMBC Penistone East and West Wards, asking residents to nominate worthy volunteers or volunteer groups in various categories, in recognition of their unpaid and otherwise unthanked efforts (a paid volunteer = 'an employee'). Please note that there is no bus service to Cubley after about 3pm. The awards scheme had been publicised on Penistone Area Team's Facebook (image).
Fri 7th PoppyPGS Act of Remembrance - From 10.40am, near the PGS War Memorial (car park entrance), Penistone Grammar School. This is an event organised by the school to commemorate their fallen PGS alumni. The public are welcome to attend. A parade will march from the school Reception to the area by the school's War Memorial and PGS Principal Paul Crook will introduce the service (details of participants later). It is likely that the local MP, Penistone Mayor and councillors will attend (not confirmed). A roll of the PGS alumni fallen will be read and represented by wooden crosses laid at the memorial stone by pupils and dignitaries. Hot drinks and biscuits will follow in the gymnasium. The school's Army Signals Regiment Cadet Force was formed in 2022 and now boasts more than 80 members. On-site parking available, lavatories in the Reception area. PGS.

Online - Adult: Earlybird £5.24, normal price not shown, probably £7.50 (last year's price), Child: under-16 free but a ticket is required with a paying adult. Penistone celebrates the foiling of the 17th century Gunpowder Plot but (unlike 2024) there's no Guy competition advertised this year, as anyone called 'Guido' might be offended if they burnt his effigy. Always a superb fireworks display with many "Oohs" and "Ahs" as the sky lights up in multiple colours. Hot food and drink by Penistone Ladies Circle and this year also has these vendors: Milk from the Hills, Flippin Eck Pancakes, Pro Pig and Nordic Pizza. Penistone FM provides atmospheric music and there will be a First Aid tent available. WCs too for the over-excited. Dress for the wind, wet and cold as it is a very exposed site and can be muddy. Good boots are essential and a flashlight is definitely useful. They banned sparklers this year due to insurance worries but have not so far mentioned ear defenders, dark glasses or fun. Penistone Bonfire Night is organised by Penistone Round Table (Fb) with a subsidy from Penistone Town Council. Profits go to local charities.

The Parade will muster by the Bowling Club around 10.30am to set off no later than 10.40am, hopefully arriving near Penistone War memorial with time to spare before 11am. The Parade is led by Thurlstone Brass Band with: service and ex-service personnel, uniformed police, fire rescue personnel, uniformed cadets, uniformed Scouts and Guides, Penistone Mayor, Councillors with spouses, dignitaries and invited citizens. The public will watch the parade on Market Street and quickly move to the ceremony before 11am. Mistakes are possible (read 'likely') and information sources often make changes, including cancellations and often with weak publicity. If you continue to read on, you accept this disclaimer. This website displays poorly on mobile devices. It pre-dates them by some time but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and fast page-loading on most tablets, laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web designers even consider smart televisions?). Although perhaps dated in style and far too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that might look good on the latest kit but crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.).

Do not worry about the 'Not secure' icon on the address bar as this website is old-style HTTP and not the latest HTTPS for extra security. It does not need to be anyway, as this website is not interactive. It does not handle payments, personal information, cookies, visitor tracking nor does it try to sell anything.
