What's On in the Penistone Area 2025

Penistone coat of armsEvents Stuff:
This is probably the best listing for local events and much better than Ents24. Please re-load the page for updates (Highlighted). The Penistone coat-of-arms depicts a more important community event. To have your own event listed here, just put up posters around Penistone shops, cafes, Tesco and the Community Centre. Don't just rely on just your own website as there are trillions of those and nobody will know to look at yours. Don't rely just on a QR code either; they don't always work. Include the basics on the poster: What, Where, When, Ticket Price (Where from), Restrictions, Contact Details and Organiser's name. Please include Day of the Week for convenience.

The Paramount
For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 weekdays 9am to 1pm, or when shows are running. Film prices are: (Online) Adult £7.50, Concessions (for young and old, stalls only) £6.50, but note that cash sales incur a £1 surcharge, see FAQs. Family tickets are available. Other tickets vary according to the event. Paramount gift cards can be used on anything in the building, can be of any value and have no expiry date. Where possible, concession tickets are for over-60s and under-15s and proof of age may be requested for 12, 12a, 15 and 18 certificate films. Children under 16 in the circle must be accompanied by an adult. Free 'Relaxed Screenings' have a relaxed atmosphere without loud adverts or trailers and lights won't be fully extinguished, so you can still find the loo in the dark. British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) icons in the listings below are linked to their rating descriptions.

With the 'Friends of Penistone Paramount' scheme, you can sponsor a seat for them to raise funds, costing £250 for three years with a little plaque on the seat (Eg. "Put you feet on the floor"). Paramount-branded sweatshirt hoodies are available from the Box Office for £35. By arrangement, wheelchair users can gain access (with friends) via a side door, given enough notice. For tickets, go online, visit the Box Office or call 76 7532 when shows are on. Recorded schedule on 76 2004. Penistone Paramount (Fb).,

Cashless Events
Very convenient for lazy organisers but discriminatory against parts of the community (which might be deliberate). Reducing the cash-flow gives power to bankers to restrict services and charge fees. Traders, market stalls, charities, shops and cafes still use real money, as do real people.

Also: 'The Clerk suggested that a representative from CashAccess UK could be invited to give a short presentation about the service.' (and) 'Light refreshments may be offered depending on the eventual venue.' The date was not fixed but is likely to be sorted out at this PTC meeting, probably for the Resource Centre (wooden hut at the bottom of the Community Centre car park). Thurs 17th Eleventh Anniversary of the Dedication of the 'QEII Field in Trust' (Historical interest) - 'The Showground Protected.' A plaque was unveiled 17th April 2014 near Penistone Bowling Club in a ceremony with Penistone and Barnsley Mayors, observed by council members, public and press on a very windy day. This was a Royal Jubilee 2012 initiative to preserve green spaces for future public use. Local people voted overwhelmingly for the land to be protected from housing development in perpetuity, with its use reserved solely for recreation. The land had originally been donated to Penistone for recreational use but BMBC had assumed ownership of Penistone's assets after Local Government Reorganisation in 1974 and felt free to do what it liked. BMBC originally had plans to build a large housing estate there, as seen by a local resident. Another plan was for a children's nursery on recreation ground. Fortunately this scheme rescued the land and we are now free to enjoy the QEII field (which includes the Showground) for as long as we like. All Barnsley can do is charge for its use by organised events. Ya boo! Fields in Trust.
Easter Weekend RBL Members' Draw - Penistone Royal British Legion. Penistone RBL Members who attend and sign in from Good Friday to Easter Monday inclusive will be entered into a £250 cash prize draw. The winner will be announced in the coming week. The RBL reminds members to make sure that their details are up to date. See RBL Facebook.
Fri 18th BH Good Friday - A movable feast day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the most important day on the church calendar. In the UK, both Good Friday and Easter Monday are Bank (national) Holidays. In the old days, real eggs (not chocolate) were decorated as gifts for Easter and they still do that in Poland. The mark of the cross on Hot Cross buns was said to preserve theleft-over buns from going off, but a 'use by' date might be more reliable. We won't get many left over buns in Penistone as they are swiftly dispatched. The Good Friday timetable for Penistone St John's church might look sonething like this:
  • 10am - 'Messy Church' in Penistone Church with the Mayor or Deputy Mayor of Penistone.
  • Following on (in the churchyard) - Traditional Flour Ceremony (see next item below) where Penistone Mayor distributes flour to the Poor of the Parish.
  • 10.30am - Easter Story and cups of tea in the church.
  • 11am - Procession of the Cross ('Walk of Witness'). An inter-denominational procession which anyone can join. The route and direction changes from year to year but it often starts outside the Tesco. Clergy and members of all local churches will take part. It would typically proceed through the Market Barn to hold prayers outside the former Cherrydale Chinese take-away, Market street. Watch for free Hot Cross buns offered to the public.
  • 2 pm - Liturgy of the Cross service in Penistone Church.
The bags of flour for the ceremony are kindly donated by Penistone Tesco. Old Customs, Penistone & Thurlstone Team Ministry, (Fb).
  ,,   ,, Traditional Flour Ceremony - Following the 10am Good Friday service, go to the Lower Churchyard ('Sensory Garden'), Penistone Church. this is a centuries-old custom. All may attend. In 1559, local landowner William Turton bequeathed to each of 'The Poor of the Parish of Penistone' a bag of rye flour to be doled out every Good Friday from the church. The details of the bequest can be found on a large panel inside the church. The flour ceremony was originally conducted at the Church door by the vicar. After Penistone Town Hall was built in 1914 (now Paramount), it moved to 'the Town Hall steps' with the Town Clerk doing the honours, with a blessing by the vicar. Somewhere along the line, rye flour was substituted by wheat flour and the event crossed the road again into the 'Sensory Garden.' In modern times, The Penistone Mayor or Deputy Mayor distributes bags of flour (usually donated by Tesco) as the vicar blesses the proceedings. See Old Customs and Penistone & Thurlstone Team Ministry, (Fb).

Spa ("Spaw") Sunday - Daytime, Gunthwaite Spa (map). Always on the first Sunday of May, a local tradition and community event where people imbibe the curative spa waters (bring a mug) and enjoy listening to Thurlstone Brass Band (band 1.30pm to 3.30pm, weather permitting). This is a quirky and ancient tradition which often draws a good crowd. There is usually a tea and cake stall. For centuries, the sulphurous spa water of Gunthwaite were held to have Miraculous Healing Powers to cure: scurvy, gout, baldness and worse (yes, that too!). In centuries past, farm workers and the gentry made a big occasion of it, often in a drunken and riotous procession led by a band, as a rare break from working in the fields. At one time, the gentry banned the event when it became too much of a drunken free-for-all. Deep-rooted in local tradition it soon made its way back on the calendar. A new surrounding wall was built around the outlet pipe in the 1970s and BMBC's Environment Health Officer 'passed' the water as safe to drink. Local Customs.

Tues 6th

Second Anniversary of the King's Coronation - The UK's King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey, 11am on Saturday 6th May 2023 as part of England's heritage going back a thousand years, something that we do well in this country. It was shown live on the big screen at Penistone Paramount and various pubs which had been allowed to open early by Royal decree. It was a happy occasion as part of our cultural heritage. There were Coronation events and parties throughout the land. Royal.UK.
Date TBC Penistone Annual Town Assembly (Community forum) - Not advertised so far but it should land some time before the PTC annual meeting (= AGM) on 19th May. This is a traditional annual event dating back centuries. Parochial meetings were where villagers met around the campfire to discuss their concerns and disagreements with the village elders and with the laying down of weapons (the word 'Wapentake' is related to this). In the modern age, the 'elders' are Penistone Town Council. Every parish or town council throughout the land is required by law to hold them (and post a notice). As public discussions, they are usually very worthwhile if residents can get to know about them. It is likely that the council will redeem itself this time after last years' farce which was accompanied by the lack of 'Seven clear days' statutory notice ( = 10 real ones) to advertise that one. Local residents should make an effort to attend to raise their concerns (which are not limited to the work of the council) and offer a vote of thanks. Unlike Borough Councillors, Town Councillors are unpaid volunteers. Penistone Town Council.
Thurs 8th VE80 Day - Commemorative events to mark the end of war in Europe in 1945, with some local activity. Possibly a small event at Penistone St John's church. VE Day.
Sat 10th 'Hits from the Blitz' (Organ concert) - 2.30pm, Penistone Paramount, Shrewsbury Road. Tickets, price not shown. In support of VE80 Day, 6th May. With Phil Kelsall MBE, Andy Eastwood and Maggie O'Hara, in the 25th year of the Compton Cinema Organ at the Penistone Paramount hall of entertainment.
Sun 11th 'Go West ' (Silent comedy film, 1925) - 3pm, Penistone Paramount, Shrewsbury Road. Tickets £15. With Buster Keaton, Harold Truesdale and Kathleen Myers, also Fatty Arbunkle (as a woman) and an uncredited bit-part in a barber shop for Buster's dad, Joe Keaton. Oh, and 'Brown Eyes' Buster's favourite cow. A silent film (unrated but probably 'U') by Buster Keaton in its centenary year, accompanied live by Donald MacKenzie on the Compton Cinema Organ. Please note that this replaces the originally-schedule Charlie Chaplin film. Penistone Paramount.
Sun 18th Penistone Boundary Walk (16 miles or do half) - Choose your own time, Cubley Hall, Mortimer Road, Cubley, Penistone, S36 9DF. £5 suggested donation, You can Register with Cubley Hall unless you are a traditionalist doing the walk without giving away personal details. A map of the route is displayed on a signboard in the car park. The full walk is about 16 miles or you might do the 8 mile half walk, or a two-mile stroll. The Penistone Charity Boundary Walk is organised by the Ladies' Circle. It might not always be on the traditional Rogation Sunday (25th May this year) nor led by the parish priest. Children are unlikely to be beaten at each boundary stone these days, to help them remember where they are, but it does keep an ancient custom alive in a different form. Customs.
  ,,   ,, 'Bell Sunday' - The Central Council of Church Bell-ringers has designated this date for church bells to be rung throughout the land, as it is close to the Feast of St Dunstan (19th May). Penistone church bell-ringers are likely to do their thing with our excellent eight bell carillon in the Penistone church tower, probably 7.30pm. Saint Dunstan was an Anglo-Saxon churchman, Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, blacksmith and bell-wright. He died in AD 988 and later became the Patron Saint of bell-ringers. Charles Dickens considered him to be a charlatan in 'A Child's History of England.' The Penistone church bell-ringers are always happy to recruit new members (see Alan Shelbourne) and can be heard every Thursday evening from 7.30pm. Not that you can ever work out what tune they are playing.
Mon 19th Annual Town Council Meeting - 7pm start, Council Chamber. Equivalent to an AGM, this meeting always follows the Town Assembly and any PTC elections. The meeting decides the make-up and membership of sub-committees for the municipal year 2025 to 2026 and can review procedures, standing orders, etc. They all are supposed to have have an equal voice but you do get to see which members have a disproportionate influence, and who gangs together. In outline, the Agenda includes these items, perhaps in a different order:
  • To elect Penistone Town Mayor, 2025 - 26 and sign the acceptance form. The retiring Mayor would pass on the chain of office.
    (The new Mayor takes up the Chair to preside over the rest of the meeting)
  • To elect the Deputy Mayor, 2025 - 26, (also acting Vice-Chair), and sign the acceptance form.
  • To resolve that any councillors who have not signed paperwork will do so by an agreed date.
  • Apologies and reasons for absence.
  • Declarations of pecuniary interests, etc.,
  • To consider whether excluding the public from elements of this meeting might be prejudicial to the public interest (!);
  • To nominate the Mayor Elect, 2026 - 27 (likely to become next year's Mayor);
  • (Usually on the agenda) To review the Standing Orders of procedure and committee requirements;
  • To elect Chairs and Members of PTC committees. The Mayor is automatically ex-officio to all sub-committees.
  • Representatives selected for various boards and bodies. These local charities have very long histories.
    • National School Trustees, two representatives,
    • Samuel Wordsworth Charity, one representative,
    • Yorkshire Local Councils Association (YLCA), one representative,
    • Hoylandswaine Almshouses, two representatives,
    • PGS Foundation Trust. five representatives.
  • To approve various Minutes, which would include Minutes (PDF icon) of the previous PTC Annual Meeting for Monday 20th May 2024;
  • Planning Aplications,
  • Report by Town Clerk on PTC operations,
  • To consider any grant applications,
  • To confirm the time and date of the next Ordinary TC meeting.
On conclusion of PTC business, some sort of 'Mayor-making' gathering will follow typically with a small buffet or an arranged meal. The new Town Mayor would also choose this year's PTC Mayor's charities. Penistone Town Council (Fb).
Sun 25th Rogation Sunday (Historical note) - Rogation Sunday is the traditional day for boundary processions throughout the land. It is an ancient church festival on the fifth Sunday after Easter Day. Historically, the Rogation Days (the three days leading to Ascension Day) were a period of fasting and abstinence, beseeching God’s blessing for a bountiful harvest and better spuds. The positions of parish boundaries were very important and could lead to disputes and skirmishes with neighbouring villages. The 'Beating of the Bounds' (Wikipedia) was an annual procession dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, long before good maps were available. It would be led by the local clergy with families tagging along. Their children would be whacked on the bum at each boundary stone to instill a knowledge of their locations. Health and Safety regulations seemed have intruded into that old tradition and now the kids can no longer remember the village boundaries. It is not an app on their smartphones. Few local boundary stones can be found now but the Hartcliff Greyhound Stone (listed at English Heritage) is one notable one to look for, built into the wall. Thanks to Penistone Round Table (Ladies' Circle) and others, an organised Boundary Walk usually takes place around this time, starting and finishing at Cubley Hall, where a boundary map can be found on display in the car park. See Customs page and the Diocese of York.

This website displays poorly on mobile devices. It pre-dates them by some time but it is fine-tuned for low memory usage and fast page-loading on most tablets, laptops, PCs and smart televisions (and how many web designers even consider smart televisions?). Although perhaps dated in style and far too verbose, this website is W3C-compliant and browser-agnostic unlike many whizz-bang websites that might look good on the latest kit but crash old laptops and smart televisions ('Out of memory' or 'You are using an old browser', etc.).
